Sewer backup coverage, explained.
When the city sewer surges, when a tree root crushes your lateral, when a heavy rain overwhelms the main — the water comes up through your floor drains. Standard homeowners insurance doesn't cover any of it. A $40/year endorsement does.
TL;DR
Sewer/drain backup is excluded by default on every standard HO-3 policy. Add the "water backup and sump overflow" endorsement — usually $40–$120/year for $10k–$25k of coverage. Average backup claim runs $7k–$12k, so it pays for itself fast.
What the endorsement actually covers
- • Damage from water/sewage backing up through sewers or drains
- • Overflow from a sump pump (or failure of the pump itself, on most carriers)
- • Cleanup, decontamination, drywall, flooring, finished-basement contents
- • Loss of use if your home becomes uninhabitable
It does not cover surface flooding (you need flood insurance for that), or backups caused by your own clogged drain you ignored for months.

Frequently asked
Is sewer backup covered by standard homeowners insurance?
No. Standard HO-3 policies exclude any loss caused by water backing up through sewers or drains. You need a 'water backup and sump overflow' endorsement to cover it.
How much does sewer backup coverage cost?
Typically $40–$120/year for $5,000–$25,000 in coverage. Higher limits ($50k+) are available from most carriers for a small additional premium.
What's the average sewer backup claim?
Industry data puts the average finished-basement sewer backup loss between $7,000 and $12,000. Claims involving sewage cleanup, drywall, flooring, and personal property routinely exceed $25,000.
Does it cover the cleanup, or just damage?
A proper endorsement covers both: water/sewage extraction and decontamination, plus damage to the structure and personal property. Read the limit — it's a single bucket, not separate sub-limits.
